homemade hummus

Updated: Aug 30, 2018

Hummus is the ultimate veggie dip from the gods.

It's healthy, it's delicious, it's everyone's favorite.

Traditionally, hummus has about a handful of ingredients. But surprise, surprise most big hummus companies like Sabra have far more than just a handful of REAL ingredients. They pack their hummus with far more sodium and fat than needed and add many unnecessary preservatives.

But guess what! It only takes about 5 minutes to make your own and it's far cheaper!

Ingredients

1 can of chickpeas

1/4 cup of tahini

1 lemon

3 cloves of garlic (add more or less depending on your love of garlic)

1 tablespoon olive oil

5 tablespoons of water

1/2 teaspoon cumin

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

***Add an extra 10 minutes to boil then peel the chickpea skins for smoother hummus***

Personally, I don't think the consistency is that big of a difference to add 10 minutes.

Open can of chickpeas and drain. Pour chickpeas into bowl. Mince garlic. Cut lemon in half. Add garlic, tahini, olive oil and squeezed lemon juice into food processor.

Process about 30 sec - 1 minute.

Add can of drained chickpeas (or boiled & peeled chickpeas) to the garlic, tahini, lemon mixture.

Process about 1 - 2 minutes. Add water for creamer texture.

Add dash of cumin & smoked paprika.

Process about 30 seconds.

Use silicone spatula to move hummus to a glass airtight container.

Top with cayenne pepper & whatever else you wish!!

Possible toppings: Red peppers, pesto, olive oil, oregano, parsley, mint, etc.

Enjoy!
